Nearest Airport: The nearest airport is the Langkawi International Airport. It is located at Padang Matsirat and it is about 25 minutes away by road from the town centre.
While there is no train connection all the way up to Langkawi, the Malayan Railway Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) runs comfortable and economical train services via Kuala Lumpur, which starts from Singapore. The train journeys offer scenic views of the countryside. The overnight trains are slower than the bus, but allow visitors to rest overnight and be fresh on arrival next morning. Train travellers can get off at the Alor Setar (Kedah) station and then take a bus or taxi to the ferry jetty at Kuala Kedah or they can disembark at Arau (Perlis) and get on a bus or taxi to the ferry jetty at Kuala Perlis.
There is no road connection all the way to Langkawi. Visitors can however, travel by road down from mainland Malaysia to ferry terminals at Kuala Kedah which is located at the north-western coast of Malaysia, about 6 hours from Kuala Lumpur or the ferry terminal at Kuala Perlis further up. Regular buses/coaches are available between Kuala Lumpur and Kuala Perlis (takes about 8 hours). Buses leaves from Pudu Sentral bus station or Hentian Duta bus station in Kuala Lumpur. The bus stand at Kuala Perlis is at a walking distance from the ferry dock.
